CRYSTALLINE FILM FESTIVAL: Official Selection

The countdown has begun! As we approach the exhilarating launch of the Crystalline Film Festival inaugural season, we are thrilled to announce the Official Selections list of our festival program. We look forward to everyone joining us on January 24th - 28th, 2022, for a week of celebration, fun interviews and exclusive talkbacks. Below you will see 35 short films from all over the world with a little synopsis that shares a bit of the story of every film.

TRASHED (Canada)

With nowhere to go after a vicious homophobic attack, Jay finds their way to an abandoned house they once lived in as a teenager.

THE 7 LIVES OF SARA BLANCHARD (United States)

A woman’s soul travels through different bodies, living through unhappy experiences. In her sixth life, she falls so deeply in love, that she invents a plan to reconnect with her husband in her next life.


 

BISTRO GIRLS (Canada)

In a potpourri of sparkles, musical numbers and documentary interview, Bistro Girls uses animation to explore the unescapable passion that drives artists, no matter their walk of life.


 

TIME TRAVELER (United States)

A Time Traveler wakes up to unknown location. He must find his way home before it's too late.


 

"N" (Italy)

An expressionist nightmare in which an inventor and his colleague test the ‘Automaton’, a machine able to create things from nothing. The machine works perfectly as long as the items it’s asked to create start with the letter N...in German. The results of the test will be predictably catastrophic.


 


BEA, SERIOUSLY (United States)

Bea shows up at her mother’s house to decide what to do about an unexpected pregnancy.


 

DEATH ROW (China)

PATIENT 013 (United Kingdom)

Lucy, a young girl plagued by traumatic visions of her past, must decide whether to place her trust in her new found companion, Ted, as they look for a solution to her pain.

GIVE TIME (Canada)

Based on a true moment shared between lovers, "Give Time" tells the story of Alice, a young woman grieving the loss of her lover, Leo. As she returns home to her apartment, the place where their relationship began, past and present merge as she is unable to deal with the guilt of living past the one she loved. As she moves through the space, she eventually discovers that the only way forward is through allowing the pain to emerge and beginning the near impossible process of letting go.


 

MOON TALK (United States)

An inquisitive woman finds herself trapped in the center of a mysterious young man's derealization of the world around him and must uncover the catalyst of his mental breakdown before falling victim to his destructive behavior.

Meanwhile, Reagan Anderson, a liberal journalist, tracks his journey in hopes of landing a great story.


 

KEPT PROGRESSION (Canada)

A deconstruction the digital medium and its internal structure through the use of “glitching.” It is a break form the adhesion of a “faithful” representation of reality to form a new one, generated through the interaction of the content and the capture medium.


 

ONE OF US (Sweden)

During the Second World War, Stockholm was the Casablanca of the Nordics. A place where information was everything. Swedish intelligence most important spy was a 22-year old German secretary and art student called Erika Wendt. A girl whose dream was of a life in Sweden with her boyfriend after the war. Then in 1943, Erika was invited to dinner by her German boss and suddenly ordered back to Berlin. Did the Gestapo know about her double life? This film is based on an actual event.

MY BODY IS A PLACE, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER (United States)

Making her way across the deserts of North America in search of a place she can find herself reflected, Carrie muses on her identity through memories, stories, and conversations with people in the trans* community to uncover what it means to have an embodied experience in the world.


 

CAKE (Canada)

Steve, a pompous full grown adolescent with an unusual fixation towards cake, encounters an eminent baker who challenges his convictions and discovers Steve’s immature nature is a mask for something much tastier.


 

GLITTER GIRL (Canada)

Olivie Moore has the perfect life. She gets to travel the world, meet amazing people and work with some of the top brands in the world. Oh, and everyone absolutely loves her! Or do they?


 

SO THE STORY GOES... (Canada)

Six friends get together at a cabin in the fall to have some fun. Connor tells a story of a hundred and fifty year old ghost that haunts the land every 10 years. As soon as he's done the story weird occurrences start to happen and the group quickly fears for their lives.


 

GENGIS KHAN (France)

Genghis Khan is a short animated film about the life of the famous warrior and conqueror. We follow the struggles he had to face and his rise to power. For good and for worse he brought deep changes to the life of his contemporaries and to the history of the world.


 

FOX (Canada)

Three young men kidnap an old man believing they are dealing with an easy target.

GIFTS FROM BABYLON (Netherlands)

Gifts from Babylon is a short film exploring the psychological impact of Africa-EU migration through the lens of a Gambian return-migrant. The film captures the personal conflicts that arise when Modou, a deported refugee, returns to his home country after having lived illegally in Europe for five years. Suffering from intense flashbacks of his illegal migrant journey, he wonders what has become of him…


 

THE CASE (United States)

A retired special victims detective is pulled back into the world of sex trafficking on a case he thought was dead cold.


 

HERE IS WHERE THE MONSTERS LIVE (United States)

Oliver tries to live through a dark episode of depression; however, memories - both joyful and sorrowful - keep pushing their way to the forefront of his mind.


 

STREAM OF CONCIOUSNESS (United States)

Stream of Consciousness follows the first date of Cole and Megan. As the date progresses we watch Cole struggle with his self doubt, personified incessantly through his reflection talking to him. As the date moves forward, Cole’s insecurities put any potential relationship at risk, only to be saved by another surprising voice.


 

JAM (Ireland)

A fledgling journalist with a faulty car stereo has to sacrifice her job interview to take her Grandad to hospital. This results in the most awkward journey of her life.


 

SHIP 2 (Canada)

SHIP is about standing in the space of confusion, not being able to choose one over the other, shifting this way or that way endlessly.
